Mukesh Kumar has joined Nottinghamshire for the final two matches of the ongoing County Championship season. The Indian and Bengal pace bowler will make his first appearance in English domestic cricket and give the county extra firepower as it chases a strong finish to the campaign.
Nottinghamshire Add Mukesh Kumar for Crucial Run-In
Nottinghamshire will field Mukesh against Sussex in Hove starting Tuesday, September 15, before he lines up against Yorkshire at home from September 24. The county currently sits second in the County Championship points table, as they won five of their six matches to accumulate 185 points. The signing arrives at a stage when every fixture carries weight in the promotion race.
Mukesh described the move as a fresh test of his abilities in a different setup. He said he wants to help the team succeed during his time there and looks forward to working alongside the coaching staff and his new teammates. He added that playing in England always presents a demanding challenge, and he is eager to take on a new team in unfamiliar conditions.
Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores welcomed the bowler’s arrival at what he called a pivotal point of the season. Moores pointed to Mukesh’s recent form in the Duleep Trophy final, where he played a central role in East Zone’s win, and said the bowler’s quality has never been in doubt given the difficulty of competing for a place in the Indian team.
Moores added that having a player who is match-fit and already in competitive rhythm gives the county a genuine boost ahead of two important games.
Recent Form and Career Numbers Back the Move
Mukesh’s recent performances support the confidence shown by his new county. He took 3 for 62 in the Duleep Trophy final as East Zone secured the title over South Zone on the strength of a first-innings lead.
Across his first-class career, he has picked up 233 wickets from 60 matches, a tally that includes ten five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket match haul. At the international level, he has represented India in three Tests and claimed seven wickets in that format.
His workload through the Duleep Trophy gives Nottinghamshire a bowler already sharpened by high-stakes cricket, rather than one returning from a break. That factor weighed heavily in the timing of the signing, since county sides rarely get the chance to add an in-form international quick this late in a season.
Indian Pacers Continue County Cricket Trend
Mukesh becomes the latest Indian cricketer to feature in county cricket this season. Kuldeep Yadav is currently with Yorkshire, and Manav Suthar has been representing Warwickshire. Auqib Nabi also turned out for Surrey earlier in the campaign.
The pattern reflects a steady flow of Indian bowlers using the County Championship to sharpen their skills outside the home season, and gain exposure to English conditions and opposition batting line-ups that differ sharply from those found on the subcontinent.
Nottinghamshire will look to translate Mukesh’s experience into wickets over the next two rounds as they push to hold their position near the top of the table.
