Taskin Ahmed will finally get to bowl against Australia on their home soil, 14 years after his first trip to the country as a teenager. The pace bowler dismissed Travis Head during that 2012 Under-19 World Cup visit, and he will now open the bowling against the same batter in a full Test match at Darwin, a fixture Bangladesh have waited 23 years to play.
Speaking ahead of the opening Test, Taskin said the series carries deep significance for him and his teammates. He called Australia one of the strongest teams in world cricket and admitted the tour will not be straightforward, but he expressed confidence that Bangladesh can compete well across the series.
Taskin’s Long Wait to Face Australia at Home
Taskin has represented Bangladesh across multiple Australian tours, including the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, the 2015 ODI World Cup, and the 2022 T20 World Cup. Despite that history, he has never played an international match against Australia on their own turf. His debut against the country came in a T20I in Mirpur 12 years ago, and since then, Australia have not toured Bangladesh for a Test series, nor has Bangladesh managed a full tour Down Under until now.
As an eight-year-old, Taskin watched from home when Australia played their only previous Test series in Bangladesh back in 2003. He grew up following Australian fast bowlers closely and said he has idolised several of the current squad’s senior pacers for years. He named Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Scott Boland among the bowlers he has studied and hopes to interact with during the tour.
Home Series Win Boosts Bangladesh’s Confidence
Bangladesh head into this tour on the back of a morale-boosting result against Australia earlier this year. The team beat Australia 2-1 in an ODI series in Mirpur two months ago, with pitches offering more pace and bounce than the surfaces traditionally associated with the venue. However, Australia’s frontline pace attack, including Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins, along with Head, did not feature in that series, as all four were managing their workload ahead of the Test tour.
Taskin led the bowling attack in that series alongside Nahid Rana, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shoriful Islam, but none of that trio is fully available for the Darwin Test. Shoriful remains the only one with a chance of playing later in the tour, at Mackay.
Tour Match Defeat Adds to the Challenge
Bangladesh’s preparation suffered a setback in a tour match against a Cricket Australia XI over the weekend. Campbell Thompson, a 22-year-old uncapped seamer, took eight wickets for 25 runs to bowl the touring side out for just 54, handing them an innings defeat. The result followed a strong batting effort from Teague Wyllie, who scored 130 against an attack led by Taskin.
Taskin acknowledged the defeat was disappointing but said the team is still adjusting to Australian conditions and pitches. Travis Head, meanwhile, downplayed the result, noting that tour matches often carry less significance for players already focused on the opening Test. He said several Bangladesh players in that game were likely already thinking ahead to Thursday’s start rather than the tour fixture itself.
