Tanzania Cricket Association opened its new international venue, the TCA Arena, in Dar es Salaam on Sunday. ICC Chairman Jay Shah inaugurated the stadium ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B 2026, which the venue will host from 8 to 18 August. ICC Board Directors, Tanzanian government officials and representatives from the country’s sporting community attended the ceremony.
TCA Arena to Host Challenge League B Matches
The tournament will run entirely at the new ground, giving Tanzania its first venue built specifically to international standards. Tanzania Cricket Association designed the facility to support ICC pathway events beyond this single tournament. Shah described the inauguration as a significant milestone for cricket in the country and credited the association for combining infrastructure development with wider participation efforts and workforce growth. He said the venue provides players, coaches and match officials with a proper platform for international competition and player development. Shah also confirmed the ICC will continue supporting Tanzania and other member nations in strengthening cricket infrastructure and expanding access to ICC programmes.
Construction Took Under Two Years to Complete
The University of Dar es Salaam allocated land for the project in October 2024. A groundbreaking ceremony followed in April 2025, and construction began the next month after site clearance and preparation work concluded. The stadium was completed in July 2026, giving Tanzania a venue capable of hosting international fixtures within roughly twenty months of groundbreaking.
The Tanzania Cricket Association, the University of Dar es Salaam and the Tanzanian government coordinated closely throughout the build. Beyond match hosting, the arena is intended to function as a training centre, supporting coach and umpire education, talent identification and grassroots cricket programmes at the community level.
Association Chairman Calls Stadium a Defining Moment
Tanzania Cricket Association Chairman Dr B.S. Sreekumar said the inauguration marks a defining moment for cricket in the country. He stated that the facility represents more than a playing venue and reflects the outcome of sustained partnership and long-term planning.
Sreekumar thanked the International Cricket Council, the University of Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian government, sponsors, contractors and staff for their contributions to the project. He said the arena gives players and coaches a permanent home while creating opportunities for Tanzania to host larger international events in the future.
The stadium’s first major assignment arrives this month, when Tanzania hosts the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B 2026, a tournament with direct implications for World Cup qualification pathways.
With construction complete, attention now turns to tournament preparations. Officials expect the venue to support both elite competition and grassroots development, positioning Tanzania as an emerging venue for cricket in the African region.
