Kolkata police arrested Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel on 11 August 2026. The arrest followed serious allegations of rape and criminal intimidation made by a medical student.
Officers took Porel into custody from a condominium in the Dum Dum area late at night. Consequently, a Chinsurah court sent the young wicketkeeper-batter to three days of police custody for further questioning.

How the Legal Case Against Abishek Porel Started
A complaint was filed at the Mogra police station by a student from Karnataka on 30 June 2026. The woman said she had been in a relationship with Porel for more than three years. But she accused him of a sexual relationship under the false pretense of marriage. She also accused the cricketer of assault and threatening her.
The woman had expressed her frustration over investigation delays on July 14 which led to the Calcutta High Court’s intervention. Justice Saugata Bhattacharjee specifically asked the police to act more quickly in protecting the dignity of the woman. The court also directed the police to seize Porel’s electronic devices to prevent any private data from being put on the internet.
Details of the Rape Allegations Against Abishek Porel
The medical student said she first met Porel in January 2023. According to her statement, their families had also discussed marriage during their three-and-a-half-year relationship. She alleged that differences began to emerge last year, after which Porel started distancing himself and eventually refused to marry her.
She further alleged that, when his parents were away, Porel took her to his flat in Hooghly district, where he forced himself on her. She also claimed that he frequently recorded their intimate moments without her consent. Fearing that the private photographs and recordings could be made public, she later approached the High Court with her complaint.
The complaint also includes allegations related to an incident on April 2, 2026. The woman claimed that she had travelled to Delhi to meet the cricketer, where Porel allegedly confined her to a room and denied her food. She said the ordeal left her physically weak and caused difficulty in walking. According to the complaint, the alleged abuse she experienced in Delhi eventually required medical attention.
Calcutta High Court Orders Arrest and Device Seizure
The Calcutta High Court ordered Porel to be taken into custody. In a mid-July hearing, the court said police need to arrest Porel to seize his electronic devices. This was necessary so that no “obnoxious data” would be shared with anybody.

Police officers visited Porel’s house in Chandernagore several times but failed to find him. Finally, meetings were held with senior officers, including the Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police, to discuss his arrest. After the meeting, police arrested Porel from the Emami City complex outside Kolkata. The officers also recovered a pen drive and sent it for forensic testing.
What Happens Next In the Legal Investigation
Abishek Porel has denied all charges against him. Police continue their serious investigation despite his denials. He faces several charges under the law, including rape, criminal intimidation and assault. Some reports mention even more charges, such as causing serious physical harm.
The Mogra police station is handling the case after the arrest. Over the next three days in police custody, he is likely to be questioned by investigators about the electronic devices and the allegations that the medical student has made.
