Leus du Plooy will leave Middlesex at the end of this season, giving up a year still remaining on his contract, as he pushes to earn a South Africa cap. The Middlesex captain has reversed his earlier plan to qualify for England and will now target a Proteas call-up instead.
Du Plooy first arrived in English cricket in 2019, joining Derbyshire on a Kolpak deal before switching to a Hungarian passport to secure local status in the county game. He moved to Middlesex ahead of the 2024 season and had spent that time working toward England eligibility.
That path is now closed as he wants to represent the country of his birth, and giving up local status means he can only stay at Middlesex going forward as an overseas player, something the club has confirmed will not happen beyond this season.
Middlesex Pay Tribute to Departing Captain
Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said the club was disappointed to lose du Plooy but backed his decision. He called him an ambitious cricketer who has always spoken openly about wanting to play international cricket and said the club respects that this route offers him the best chance.
Coleman also praised du Plooy’s record at Lord’s and across the county circuit, noting that a first-class average above 50 places him among the best players to turn out for Middlesex. He added that the door remains open for du Plooy to return as an overseas signing.
Du Plooy thanked the club in a personal statement, calling the decision to leave a difficult one that he did not take lightly. He said the chance to explore a South Africa career had presented itself and that he felt he owed it to himself to pursue it, and described it as a dream he has carried for years. He also thanked Middlesex for supporting him through the process and said the club would always hold a special place in his career.
A Prolific Run-Scorer in County Cricket
Du Plooy has built a strong record during his years in England. He has passed 6000 first-class runs with 16 centuries. At Middlesex alone, he has scored 2795 runs at an average of 51.75 in the County Championship. He still has a role to play before he leaves, with Middlesex sitting fourth in Division Two, 23 points behind second place, and three rounds remaining in their push for promotion.
Franchise Career Shifts With Eligibility Change
His local status also allowed him to play regularly in the Hundred, where he has turned out for Welsh Fire, Southern Brave, and this year’s champions, Manchester Super Giants. But it worked against him in the SA20, where he had to sign as an overseas player. Switching his international allegiance back to South Africa changes that.
Johannesburg Super Kings have now retained him as a local player for the 2026-27 SA20 season, a direct benefit of the decision he has made to chase a Proteas cap.
Middlesex have not named a replacement captain, and du Plooy’s departure leaves a gap at the top of a squad still fighting for promotion this season.
