Cricket South Africa (CSA) has withdrawn a number of key international players from the English County Championship ahead of the last three rounds of the season to prepare them for upcoming international series and an extended domestic calendar.
First-class cricketers Kyle Verreynne, Simon Harmer, Beyers Swanepoel, and David Bedingham will be immediately removed from their English clubs as South Africa prepares to host Australia on 9 October 2026. Impact on English County Title Chase
The withdrawal of South African players heavily impacts Nottinghamshire as they fight for the Division One title. Nottinghamshire has lost wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne for their final three Championship matches against Hampshire, Sussex, and Yorkshire.
Nottinghamshire currently sits second in the County Championship table, four points behind Somerset and one point ahead of Warwickshire. Verreynne has played a vital role for Nottinghamshire this summer. He scored 368 runs, and took 32 catches and one stumping behind the wickets in 10 matches.

Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire director of cricket, expressed his disappointment. He stated that losing Verreynne at this point in the season will disrupt their title chase. However, they understand and accept Cricket South Africa’s decision to call back their players.

Harmer, who plays on a hybrid contract with CSA, had to leave Essex before their crucial match against Yorkshire at Headingley. This recall leaves Essex without their leading spinner for the final matches of the season.

Durham will also finish their red-ball season without David Bedingham. Durham recently announced that Bedingham signed a contract extension for next season, but his immediate departure weakens their batting lineup for their penultimate fixtures. Both Bedingham and Verreynne hold full national contracts with CSA for the 2026/27 season, which run from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027.

Preparation for Australia Test Series
The national board withdrew these players because South Africa has a packed international calendar. The Proteas will host Australia in a Test series starting on 9 October 2026, which is only 12 days after the English county season ends.
South Africa has also scheduled three preparatory One-Day Internationals (ODIs) before the Test matches begin. Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne represents the first-choice option behind the stumps for South Africa’s Test team. CSA wants all contracted players in the national camp early to prepare for this high-profile series.
