Cricket West Indies (CWI) appointed 66-year-old New Zealander Bob Carter as its new batting consultant on 1 September 2026. CWI announced the one-year agreement from St John’s, Antigua, on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
The former New Zealand women’s head coach will work across the West Indies men’s, women’s, and youth cricket programmes. Carter aims to raise technical batting standards across the Caribbean and upgrade the regional coaching setup. He takes up this role as West Indies teams prepare for the Men’s ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in February and March 2027.

Immediate Assignment and Regional Tour
Bob Carter will start his official duties with a comprehensive tour across the Caribbean later in September 2026. He will visit all six first-class territories during this trip. These territories include Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Leeward Islands, and the Windward Islands.
On each island, Carter will work directly with elite players, emerging batters, and local coaches. He will assess current batting talent and examine local coaching needs across domestic setups. This initial tour will help him establish a firm base for a unified regional technical programme.
Core Responsibilities and Coaching Support
Carter’s contract covers two principal focus areas for West Indies cricket. First, he will give specialist technical advice to both top-level and developing batters. Second, he will teach regional coaches how to design and run effective individual batting plans.
Carter will assist local coaches when international players return to their home territories. He will also team up with CWI’s High-Performance staff to create new batting training modules. CWI will include these new training modules in its regional coach education system. This initiative will ensure that coaches at every level of Caribbean cricket gain access to better training methods.
International Schedule and World Cup Preparation
The strategic arrival of Carter aligns with a busy international schedule for West Indies cricket. West Indies national teams will compete in at least six global cricket events over the next 24 to 30 months. The senior men’s side faces the Men’s ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in February and March 2027.
Following that tournament, the team will enter its final preparation window for the Cricket World Cup. CWI views the consolidation of team batting depth as an urgent goal ahead of these major events.

Bascombe noted that West Indies teams must lay proper groundwork now for future tournament success. He stated: “West Indies teams will participate in at least 6 global events over the next 24-30 months, including the Men’s World Cup Qualifier next February. The steps we take now are intended to lay the groundwork for success. Bob’s immediate job is to raise the technical standard heading into these events”.
