The England and Wales Cricket Board has opened an investigation after a video surfaced showing fast bowler Brydon Carse in handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby on Saturday night.
The footage adds to a string of off-field controversies that have followed the England cricket team over the past year and renews scrutiny of the squad’s relationship with alcohol.
Video Shows Carse Restrained by Police in Derby
The clip began circulating on social media on Sunday before the Telegraph published it more widely. It shows Carse with his arms held behind his back in handcuffs while police officers surround him. He appears to be speaking with his Durham teammate Matthew Potts during the exchange.
Former England captain Ben Stokes, who had bowled Durham to victory earlier that day, also appears in the background of the footage. The ECB confirmed on Sunday that it was aware of an incident reported to have taken place in Derby and stated that it was investigating the matter further. Derbyshire Constabulary has been contacted for comment, while Durham has declined to respond to questions about the incident.
Carse Was Celebrating a Durham Win Before the Incident
Carse featured for Durham in the County Championship match against Derbyshire after being left out of England’s Test squad for the opening match against Pakistan. He contributed 26 runs with the bat and took match figures of 2 for 82 as Durham secured victory inside three days.
The bowler was reportedly out celebrating with his teammates when police detained him. Carse was not on international duty when the incident occurred, though he holds a central contract with the ECB, which increases the sensitivity of the timing.
He had been scheduled to rejoin the England Test squad in London on Monday ahead of two training sessions at Lord’s before Thursday’s second Test against Pakistan. His involvement in that fixture could now face uncertainty depending on how the investigation unfolds.
Incident Adds to England’s Recent Pattern of Off-Field Trouble
Carse missed most of the home summer with wrist and elbow injuries before returning to full fitness during his stint with Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred. He earned a recall to the Test squad on the back of that form, having been England’s leading wicket-taker during the previous Ashes series.
This latest episode follows a separate incident earlier in the summer involving Stokes and Gus Atkinson, who were both suspended pending an investigation into their conduct after a night out following the first Test against New Zealand. That inquiry later cleared both players of violent conduct but resulted in written warnings for breaching contractual obligations.
England managing director Rob Key rejected suggestions at the time that the team represented a national embarrassment. However, he issued fresh guidance on alcohol consumption that head coach Brendon McCullum later relaxed following a T20I series win over India.
Stokes has since stepped back from international cricket and suggested the ECB’s handling of that earlier incident influenced his decision, while acknowledging that cricket carries a broader culture tied to alcohol.
New Test captain Joe Root scrapped the team’s midnight curfew after taking charge, saying he trusted players to conduct themselves as adults away from the field. The Carse investigation now places renewed pressure on that approach ahead of the second Test at Lord’s.
