The ICC has withdrawn the demerit point issued to Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The board had penalised the venue for preparing an “unsatisfactory” pitch during the third ODI between Pakistan and Australia in June.
This marked the first occasion on which the Lahore venue received such a sanction. An appeals panel reviewed the case and cleared the ground of any wrongdoing.
Why the Pitch Drew Criticism
The surface came under fire for offering excessive help to spinners in a low-scoring contest. Pakistan won the match by four wickets after restricting Australia to 157 in 42 overs. Of the three ODIs played in Rawalpindi and Lahore, this was the only game in which neither side crossed 200 runs. Pakistan had turned to spin-friendly tracks throughout the series, a strategy captain Shaheen Afridi openly defended at the time.
Match referee Graeme Labrooy rated the pitch “unsatisfactory,” and described it as slow and difficult for batters to build an innings on. He noted that the surface assisted spin from the early overs and continued in the same fashion for the rest of the match. Labrooy said the conditions made it hard for batters to settle and did not suit the format of a One-Day International.
How the ICC Reached Its Decision
The Pakistan Cricket Board pushed back against the sanction soon after it was announced. A board spokesperson reported that officials were reviewing the ICC’s concerns alongside the available evidence before deciding whether to formally challenge the ruling. That process eventually led to the appeal being heard.
After examining match footage, the referee’s report, and statements from both teams, the panel concluded that the pitch did not show excessive unevenness or turn. As a result, the demerit point was struck off the venue’s record.
This is the second time the PCB has successfully overturned a pitch-related penalty from the ICC. The board achieved a similar reversal after Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was sanctioned for the pitch used in the Pakistan vs England Test in December 2022, which was a match England won by 74 runs after posting 506 for 4 on the opening day.
What This Means for Future Fixtures
Gaddafi Stadium remains a key venue on Pakistan’s cricket calendar. The ground is set to host four ODIs as part of a triangular series involving Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England in October. It will also stage the second Test against Sri Lanka in November. The cleared record removes any lingering concerns about the venue heading into that packed schedule.
Elsewhere, the ICC appeals panel issued mixed rulings on other pitches flagged during the same period. The Maple Leaf Cricket Ground in King City, Toronto, will keep its three demerit points after the panel upheld the match referee’s “unfit” rating for the Canada vs Netherlands fixture in the Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 on June 16.
However, the panel overturned the earlier “unsatisfactory” rating given to the pitch used for the USA vs Netherlands match on June 8, ruling that the surface met satisfactory standards after all.
The reversal at Gaddafi Stadium gives Pakistan’s board some relief ahead of a busy home season, while the split verdicts from Toronto show the ICC continues to assess each pitch complaint strictly on its own merits.
