Josh Hazlewood Takes 300th Test Wicket for Australia

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood reached 300 Test wickets on 15 August 2026. He achieved this milestone on the third day of the first Test against Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium in Darwin.

Hazlewood is the ninth Australian and 42nd bowler to reach that mark in the history of the sport. He claimed the landmark wicket when Mehidy Hasan Miraz edged one to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Josh Hazlewood Reaches Historic Milestone in Darwin

Josh Hazlewood needed five wickets to reach the 300 mark in Darwin. He claimed those wickets in an all-round dominant performance, taking 6 wickets for 89 runs.

This performance also marked Hazlewood’s 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He also claimed the final wicket of the Bangladesh innings when he bowled out Ebadot Hossain and finished with a career tally of 301 wickets. And he has cemented his place as one of the most consistent fast bowlers to play for Australia.

An Elite Group of Australian Bowling Legends

Hazlewood has joined a list of Australian legends with 300 wickets. He now stands alongside legends such as Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Dennis Lillee.

Australia now holds the record for the only Test side in history to field a bowling attack where all four members have 300 or more wickets. Hazlewood joins current team-mates Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and captain Pat Cummins in the exclusive club. Therefore, the present group is statistically the most successful “four-pronged” attack the game has ever seen.

A Successful Return from Injury

Before the Darwin Test, Josh Hazlewood had played only six of Australia’s previous 14 Tests. He had been sidelined for the past 12 months with an Achilles injury that ruled him out of the entire Ashes series.

The injuries meant Hazlewood’s spot in the starting eleven was not guaranteed. Captain Pat Cummins faced a tough call picking Hazlewood over fellow bowler Scott Boland. But the team management had faith in Hazlewood’s long-term record and his “metronomic” accuracy.

What This Means For Australia

Despite Hazlewood’s 300-wicket milestone, Australia find themselves trailing behind in the series. Bangladesh scored a massive 426 in their first innings. Tanzid Hasan made 101, Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 65.

Australia struggled in the first innings, collapsing to 198. This left the hosts 228 runs short. Australia were 161/4 in their second innings at the end of Day 3, still 67 runs behind. Cameron Green and Alex Carey remain not out.

Hazlewood said the pitch was showing signs of variable bounce, which could help Australian bowlers on the final day. So, the team feels a win is still possible if they can build pressure. However, Australia were all out on Day 4, 16 August 2026, making 284 runs. Now, Bangladesh only need 57 runs to win the 1st Test.
