2>Strengthening the Squad for the Season Run-In
Surrey officials completed the deal this week as they look to improve their position in Division One. The club currently sits seventh in the table with 91 points after eight matches. Consequently, they need strong performances to climb higher during the final six games of the summer.
Mahipal Lomror has played 63 first-class matches and has an average of 42.62. He also offers a left-arm spin bowling option. This makes him an ideal addition for the closing stages of the English cricket season.
Replacing Key England International Stars
The decision to sign Lomror follows the loss of two key players to injury and international duty. England all-rounder Will Jacks is currently recovering from an ankle injury. He managed this injury for much of the summer but now requires a period of rest and recovery.

Secondly, England Test cap Dan Lawrence is absent from the squad after being called up for the national side. Lawrence is preparing for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.
An Experienced Captain from Rajasthan
Lomror is a known face in Indian domestic cricket. He is the captain of Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy. He had a good last season and was the second-highest scorer for his state. He made two centuries in that campaign at an average of 48.66.
Lomror also made the headlines in November 2024 when he scored the best of his career — an unbeaten 300 against Uttarakhand. He showed he could bat for long periods, a crucial skill in the County Championship, with his triple century. He recently also played for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has proved his worth in the shorter formats of the game.
Joining a Familiar Face at the Kia Oval
At Surrey, Lomror will reunite with his Rajasthan teammate Rahul Chahar. Chahar, a leg-spinner, joined the club earlier this season and has already featured in two matches. Having two players from the same Indian state team should help Lomror settle into the dressing room quickly.
Alec Stewart, Surrey’s Director of Men’s Cricket, expressed his satisfaction with the signing. He noted that the busy global cricket schedule often makes it hard to find available players. The Director also mentioned the importance of having a player who can play both the bat and ball.
Challenging New Conditions in English Cricket
Lomror sees the move as a big step in his career. Playing in the County Championship is a huge opportunity to test himself in different conditions, he said. “Indian players have always gone to England to improve against the red ball on the grassier pitches.”

“I am happy to be joining Surrey for the rest of the season,” Lomror said in an official statement. He also said he is looking forward to learning from the wealth of experience of the players already at the club. It could be an experience that proves crucial to his future hopes of playing for the Indian national side.
